State takes over Boone County Schools

The West Virginia Board of Education has taken control of Boone County Schools due to noncompliance. The agency said in a news release that there were “irregularities in the use of federal funds,” and a federal criminal investigation is underway into Boone County Schools. The state’s Office of Accountability is also conducting a review. The WVBE voted to intervene immediately, taking over the position of county superintendent and assistant superintendent as of June 11, 2025. Deirdre Cline has been appointed as the interim county superintendent.
