State to receive millions more in opioid settlement money

Attorneys general across the country have finalized a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and its owners in a lawsuit over the company’s role in fueling the opioid crisis. West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey said the state will receive up to $53 million over the course of nine years, an accelerated timetable compared to the 15 years for most states, due to the disproportionate impact the opioid crisis had on the Mountain State, according to a news release. Like prior opioid settlements, the settlement with Purdue and the Sackler family will involve resolution of legal claims by state and local governments. The settlement is contingent upon bankruptcy court approval. A hearing is scheduled on that matter in the coming days. In total, West Virginia has obtained more than $1 billion in settlement funding from companies involved in the opioid epidemic.
