A man accused of secretly recording a foreign exchange student he was hosting in Cabell County has been federally indicted for wiretapping. The federal indictment follows a lawsuit filed in 2022 alleging Darrel Lee Wells of Barboursville placed hidden cameras hidden in everyday items including a towel hook and phone charger to record a 17-year-old girl who was in the US as an exchange student from Brazil. Wells was charged with criminal invasion of privacy and child pornography after investigators reported finding him to be in possession of more than 600 illegal images. The victim has returned to South America. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for July 28 and Wells’ trial is set for Aug. 12 in Huntington.
