A West Virginia man admits skimming off the top of veterans’ benefits

A Huntington man pleaded guilty this week to accepting a cut of veterans’ disability benefits after assisting them with preparing their claims. Timothy Crowder received about $24,500 from disability benefits awarded to veterans while he was working at the Veterans Benefits Administration. Prosecutors said from September 2020 to July 2023, Crowder assisted 13 veterans with preparing their claims for retroactive disability benefits. Crowder admitted to taking 10-20% of awarded benefits once the claims were approved, according to a news release. Crowder is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 27 and faces a maximum of five years in prison. He’ll also have to pay restitution.
