Upcoming studies will aim to help areas prone to flooding

Governor Patrick Morrisey has announced two major flood mitigation studies aimed at finding long-term solutions to reduce flood damage across the state.

The projects will cost about $6 million in total, with funding split between state and federal sources. They’ll focus on two key areas: the Upper Guyandotte River and the Kanawha River Basin.
The Kanawha River Basin study will cover 20 counties. It’ll evaluate everything from environmental to economic and social benefits of possible flood protection projects.

Both studies will be done in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and will include several areas hit hard by the February 2025 floods.
