Henry Clay Hotel destroyed by fire

A large fire that broke out around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, destroyed a vacant hotel in Clay County and was still burning Thursday remains under active investigation.The old Henry Clay Hotel is a total loss, and two businesses in the building next door had water damage from firefighting efforts to keep the blaze from spreading, with flames leaping from the now gone roof. Four firefighters were overcome by the heat, which already felt like about 102 degrees before the fire was spotted. It took nine fire departments to bring it under control. Neighbors said there had been problems with people getting into the building.
