Morrisey issues EO for state law enforcement to assist ICE

While the executive order calling on state law enforcement to help U.S. Immigration and Customs was one of the first things West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey did, it’s taken months to formalize the deal between the West Virginia National Guard, the West Virginia State Police, the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the feds. The paperwork allows designated local officers to perform certain immigration officer functions under ICE’s direction and oversight. They’ll need 40 hours of training first, including coursework on avoiding racial profiling. ICE tactics have produced results and controversy elsewhere. As of Wednesday, West Virginia had 88 total illegal immigrants in its custody, with 46 of those detained on immigration charges.
