The Mountaineers are honoring one of their own with a new scholarship. The Douglas J. Skaff Jr. Mountaineer Spirit Scholarship will be offered to business and economic students involved with student government or the Mountaineer Maniacs, according to a news release from the West Virginia University Foundation. The memorial scholarship will be funded by gifts from family and friends of Doug Skaff, a former Kanawha County lawmaker, businessman and WVU graduate. Skaff enrolled at WVU in the late 1990s and founded the Mountaineer Maniacs, a passionate student organization that supports athletics. He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing along with a master’s in industrial and labor relations and business management. He went on to serve in the West Virginia House of Delegates and become president of HD Media. Skaff died in a car crash along Interstate 79 in Lewis County in June. He was 48 years old.
