Reducing the number of chronically absent students has been important for Kanawha County Schools. Attendance director, Kim Legg, told WCHS TV that two years ago they were at 20.58% and last year, it was 17.701%, or a 3% improvement. This comes after a law was changed in July of last year to implement a support system for chronically absent students. Legg credits the tiered support system as the catalyst for improving the numbers. The numbers will continue to be monitored throughout the school year.
