A concerning federal audit of West Virginia’s child welfare system showed that nearly all of the 100 child abuse and neglect cases studied in the audit did not follow proper protocol during the investigation. According to the audit done by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General, 91 of the 100 failed to meet the federal standards for investigation and follow-up. Glenn Richter, a director in the audit division for the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said the federal government will continue following up with the state to ensure the corrective measures given are followed.
