A major renovation project in Charleston is focused on making city fire stations more livable for the firefighters who work 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off. The work at Station No. 2 on the West Side started in mid-October and will take about six months. The focus is individual sleeping rooms and bathrooms that will provide privacy for women firefighters along with a first-class kitchen. Mayor Amy Goodwin showed off the work in progress Wednesday, where the replacement of dormitory-style living quarters has been a priority, saying “Some of these budlings are 30, 40 or 50 years old and just as you do in your own homes and the place that you work, you need a facelift,”.
