Shooter was from Afganistan, came to US seeking asylum

Federal sources say the suspect who allegedly shot two National Guard soldiers on Wednesday afternoon had a connection to Bellingham in Washington state.The suspect in the shooting has been identified by law enforcement as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, according to multiple law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation. Sources said Lakanwal is believed to be from Afghanistan and came to the United States in 2021 under the Biden administration. Lakanwal applied for asylum in 2024 and was granted asylum in April 2025, under the Trump administration, according to three law enforcement sources.
