Traffic violation leads to high-speed chase and arrest

A Kanawha County man is behind bars after a high-speed chase early Thursday morning. Deputies say 39-year-old James Howard Stump II led them on a pursuit along Elk River Road around 4:30 a.m., reaching speeds up to 115 miles per hour.

Spike strips stopped the car near a Hardee’s, but Stump kept driving until his vehicle got stuck on a dirt road in Pinch. He was taken into custody about 20 minutes later.

Deputies say the chase began after they tried to pull him over for defective equipment. Stump’s license was revoked, and his car had improper registration.

He’s being held on a $5,000 bond.
