Closure is being considered for one Logan County elemetary school

Another West Virginia school is on track to close. The Logan County Board of Education has approved shutting down Verdunville Elementary, which has been closed all school year after a hillside slip last April. Superintendent Sonya White says the 70-year-old building has major safety issues and an $8.4 million repair price tag—too high for a school that had just over 100 students and declining enrollment.

Students and staff have been housed at nearby Omar Elementary since August, and White says there’s plenty of space with no overcrowding. One bus route runs about five minutes over the 45-minute limit, and the county is seeking a waiver.

The state Board of Education is expected to take up the closure proposal next week.
