Danville seeks to join Home Rule program

A Boone County town is seeking to become the 35th community in West Virginia to operate under home rule.

The town of Danville has submitted its final application to the state, proposing a new access tax on items purchased from outside city limits. If approved, the tax would apply to purchases from large online and corporate retailers that do not currently generate revenue for the town.

Supporters say the move would help level the playing field for local businesses, which often struggle to compete with online sellers. Small business owners say the goal is to encourage residents to shop locally and keep money in the community.

Danville’s proposal will now be reviewed by the West Virginia Home Rule Board.
