Del Shamblin is advocating for justice for victims of sextortion

In the wake of a Nitro teen’s tragic suicide linked to online sextortion, Del Andy Shamblin, R-Kanawha, is advocating for justice for victims.Shamblin emphasized the need for updated laws, “Our laws have not really kept up with the pace of change in technology.” Shamblin plans to propose a bill that would create a felony offense for sextortion, with penalties ranging from one to five years imprisonment and fines up to $10,000. The bill also includes enhanced penalties for crimes involving minors. Sen. Laura Chapman, R-Ohio, who has worked on mandating online education programs for students, noted the difficulty in tracking perpetrators, many of whom operate from overseas.
