Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority rolls out new efficiencies

The Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority is changing how it responds to 911 calls as it works through nationwide shortages of paramedics and EMTs. After more than 50 years using a single-tier system, the agency launched a new tiered response model on December first.

Instead of sending the closest unit, Metro 911 will now dispatch the most appropriate ambulance for each call. Advanced Life Support crews will handle life-threatening emergencies like cardiac events or strokes, while Basic Life Support units will be sent to minor injuries.

The system also uses “fly cars” to get paramedics to scenes when needed. Officials say the first day showed major improvements and that the change should help manage staffing shortages and reduce costs as the rollout continues.
