School Building Authority approves just a handful of projects

More than half of proposed school construction projects across West Virginia will not receive funding next year after action by the State School Building Authority.

During its final meeting of 2025 on Monday, the authority approved just over 49 million dollars for 12 projects statewide, leaving many others on the chopping block. Requests from 30 counties totaled more than 170 million dollars.

Approved projects include a major addition at Clay County High School, renovations and upgrades in counties such as Barbour, Mercer, Raleigh and Logan, and HVAC replacements across several school systems. The authority is also continuing funding for new school construction in Kanawha and Putnam counties.

Several projects were denied funding, including work planned in Cabell County, along with dozens of other counties statewide.

Officials say counties that were denied may reapply next year, but funding would be limited to smaller grant amounts.
