Wayne County school board considers closing two elementary schools

Wayne County is facing tough choices as school leaders consider closing or consolidating two elementary schools to help balance a multi-million-dollar budget shortfall. Genoa Elementary, along with Dunlow Elementary, are the schools under consideration for closing or consolidation to save money. At Genoa Elementary, $4.2 million has to be cut from the budget. More than $1 million in cuts have already been identified. Closing both schools would save nearly $2 million. Eyewitness News said any changes at both schools would take effect during the 2026-27 school year. The board meets again on Tuedsay, December 9, and they’re expected to have a final decision then.
