Kawawha County leaders try to find savings in the new budget

The Kanawha County Commission is reviewing its budget to decide how taxpayer dollars will be spent this year. Commissioners say they’re closely examining every line item to find savings while maintaining essential services. Last year’s general fund topped 61-and-a-half million dollars, with rising costs tied to jail expenses and employee health insurance. WCHS TV said they expect those costs to climb again this year, even as revenues increase from higher property values. Commissioners say taxes will not be raised. Budget requests are due in February, with final approval expected by the end of March.
