Putnam County athletic facilities to see improvements this year

Seven Putnam County school sports facilities are set for major upgrades funded by a bond approved by voters in 2024.

The Putnam County Board of Education approved a contract Monday with Swope Construction to handle renovations at multiple middle and high school outdoor athletic facilities. The 13-million-dollar project will benefit Hurricane, Winfield, Poca, and Buffalo high schools, along with George Washington, Poca, and Winfield middle schools.

The work is part of a bond originally focused on health and safety improvements and will include upgrades to lighting, press boxes, and bleachers. While football fields will see most of the changes, improvements are also planned for baseball, softball, and soccer facilities.

District leaders say the goal is to have everything ready for next fall’s sports season.
