Questions abound on what to do with aging Municipal Auditorium

The last performance on the stage of the Municipal Auditorium in Charleston was almost two years ago. Due to the building slowly being deemed more and more unsafe. Since then, the city of Charleston has had several studies done to better define what can be done with the building that was built in 1939. The first study in 2024 offered two options.: Do a full renovation complete with an addition to bring the building up to code, or demolish and put a new building in its place. The price tag for option one came in at around $1.5 million while option two is closer to the $5 million mark. Chief of Staff for the City of Charleston Matthew Sutton said no matter the decision, having a venue like the auditorium is a must because of the revenue brought in by the events that are held.
