Drivers noticed partial lane closures Monday as work began on the Montrose Bridge Replacement Project in South Charleston.
Crews installed protective screening beneath the bridge ahead of a full replacement.
Traffic tends to back up in that area of I-64, especially for those trying to exit the bridge.
In July, Triton Construction Inc. was awarded a more than $23 million contract to replace the Montrose Drive Overpass, which spans I-64, First Avenue and Second Avenue in South Charleston.
Transportation officials with the West Virginia Division of Highways say more lane closures will happen, but they plan to minimize disruptions during the project.
