New bill addresses tax revenue that comes from data centers

Lawmakers in the West Virginia House of Delegates debated changes this week to House Bill 4983, a proposal directing the Department of Commerce on how to distribute tax revenue from future data centers to fund essential services.

Two amendments — one from a Democrat and one from a Republican — sought to monitor water and sewage usage at proposed data center sites. After more than two hours of discussion, neither amendment gained enough support to pass. The bill is scheduled for a final vote on the House floor Tuesday.
