After 15 years of planning, construction is now underway on the new Floyd County Animal Shelter, though officials say more funding is still needed before it can open its doors.
Crews have started digging footers and laying the foundation across from the old shelter, with hopes of getting the building under roof within the next couple of months. Eyewitness News said, so far, more than $500,000 has been raised to kickstart the project. Leaders say they wanted to begin construction to show donors their contributions are making a difference. Plans for the new space include outdoor run areas for dogs and a playroom for cats once they’ve been vetted.
360 Contracting is leading construction. Fundraising efforts are ongoing, with about $300,000 still needed to fully outfit and complete the facility.
