A partial building collapse in Athens County, Ohio led to evacuations and road closures in Nelsonville.
City officials say about six feet of brick wall gave way at The Mine Tavern on Sunday, prompting an emergency inspection. A structural engineer determined the building is unsafe and poses a risk to nearby businesses. The tavern will now be demolished.
Eyewitness News said, as a precaution, residents of the nearby Dew House, a historic hotel converted into senior housing, were evacuated and temporarily relocated to Stuart’s Opera House. Officials say local organizations are working to find temporary housing until the area is safe.
Public Square remains closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic until further notice.
