State steps in as Hancock County Schools struggle to make payroll

After Hancock County Schools fell into a severe financial crisis, state leaders stepped in to prevent missed payroll and possible school closures. West Virginia State Superintendent Michele Blatt said the district couldn’t make payroll in February, prompting the West Virginia State Board of Education to intervene and replace the superintendent.

House Bill 4574 and House Bill 4575 would allow funding outside the state formula and provide $8 million to cover the shortfall. While the House fast-tracked the bills, the Senate is holding off, citing concerns about accountability and a possible investigation. Lawmakers are now considering a repayment plan, as officials warn payroll could again be at risk by June without action.
