A bill allowing more flexibility in school calendar awaits governor’s signature

A bill headed to the governor would let West Virginia schools replace the traditional 180-day calendar with a requirement of 900 instructional hours.

Supporters say the change would give counties more flexibility in structuring the school year and allow for options like adjusted schedules or even a four-day week.

Some educators are concerned longer school days could be tough on students, especially younger children who may struggle with fatigue and attention over extended hours.

Lawmakers behind the bill say it’s not a mandate, but simply another tool for local districts to decide what works best for their communities.

If approved, the new system would take effect July 1, 2027.
