Crews begin patching I-64 in the Dunbar and Institute areas

Road crews will be working to repair potholes along Interstate 64 in Kanawha County on Tuesday.

The West Virginia Division of Highways says crews will patch the westbound lanes of I-64 in the Dunbar and Institute areas from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Officials say the work is possible thanks to a recent stretch of warm weather that has allowed asphalt plants to reopen earlier than usual. Those plants typically begin operating around early April.

More asphalt plants in Clarksburg, Morgantown, Ripley and the Eastern Panhandle are expected to reopen by the end of March.

Transportation officials say while potholes can be temporarily repaired in cold weather using a cold patch mixture, warmer temperatures allow crews to make more permanent repairs with hot asphalt.
