KCHA isn’t taking new animals because of a distemper outbreak

The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association is temporarily pausing dog and puppy intakes through April second after a spike in distemper cases, with more than a dozen dogs affected or exposed. The shelter will still take emergency cases while monitoring the situation. They say most recently adopted pets are likely safe, especially if vaccinated, but owners should watch for symptoms as staff work to contain the outbreak and continue limited services.
