State Health Department Releases Stats On Age Groups Affected by COVID-19

COVID-19 in West Virginia is not just targeting one age group. Statistics show the positive virus cases include younger people and seniors. The state Department of Health and Human Resources reported Monday morning that of the 890 people who tested positive for the virus, 22% are 70 years old or older. About 18% are ages 50 to 59 and the following age groups each make up 15% – 60 to 69, 40 to 49 and 20 to 29. Data shows people ages 30 to 39 make up 12% of the positive COVID-19 cases, while ages 10 to 19 comprise 3% and ages 0 to 9 make up 1%. Females make up 57.9% of the positive cases, and males make up 39.8%. The sex of another 2.4% is unknown.

The good news is that many people who tested positive have recovered or are in home isolation rather than being treated at the hospital, at least when looking at the five counties with the highest COVID-19 positive totals: Kanawha, Berkeley, Jackson, Monongalia and Wayne.
