West Virginia courts are preparing for a gradual reopening. The state Supreme Court says hearings will begin May 18th. Local courts are not required to resume in-person proceedings immediately.
Kanawha County is working with the justice system to deal with a backlog of cases. Hearings and arraignments can be held over the phone and through video calls, but jury trials aren’t possible. Prosecutors say that poses concerns about a defendant’s right to a speedy trial.
