Public access sites along the Elk River in Kanawha County are getting an upgrade, and some new locations are being added as well.
The projects are part of a West Virginia Division of Natural Resources initiative to improve river access for anglers and kayakers. Governor Jim Justice said the Elk River is a good resource for fishing and kayaking and draws tourists. Work is currently underway on sites near Clendenin and Big Chimney. The DNR will close a site at Blue Creek to build a larger one upstream.
A public access site at Mink Shoals will also be closed for a new location at Coonskin Park. Each access site is located between four and six miles apart to spread out fishing pressure and make it easier to perform maintenance.
