A New Bill May Require Student Aid Applications

State lawmakers are considering a bill that could affect high school students.
House Bill 2702 would require public high school students to complete and submit a free application for federal student aid also known as FASFA. This would start at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year and students would either have to file a FASFA or file a waiver created by the state board that says the parent, guardian or student understands what FASFA is and has chosen not to file. The high school principal would also have to say that the school has made a good faith effort to help the student. This comes as West Virginia FASFA application submissions decreased 20%.
