MacCorkle Avenue runs the length of the city of Charleston on the south side of the river and was recently paved to the west of 33rd Avenue. WCHS TV points out that the length of the four-lane to the east through Kanawha City is riddled with asphalt patches and city council member Chad Robinson said it’s the worst he has seen the road since 1986. A section of the road near the 35th Street Bridge was supposed to be paved last year, but now the state Division of Highways has a new plan to include it as one of the projects in the 2021 General Obligation Bond Sale, set to take place later this spring. City leaders are trying to speed up the process now. Earlier in the year, Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin requested MacCorkle Avenue to be considered a medical access road, since Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Hospital is right off of it and ambulances frequently drive it. It would have made it a priority to be fixed. That request was denied by the DOH.
