Dept. of Education Aims to Increase Students’ Proficiency in Core Subjects

The West Virginia Department of Education released data from the state assessments in schools this past spring after not testing in 2020 due to the pandemic. The department said it will use the data to focus efforts and resources on addressing learning gaps and improving student achievement.
Overall, 40% of West Virginia students were proficient in English language arts, 28% were proficient in mathematics and 27% were proficient in science, according to the data. More than 91% of students in grades 3-8 and 11 were tested. Parents will receive an individual student report that details the student’s performance as well as comparisons at the school, district and state levels.
