Nucor Reveals More About Tax Incentives That Drew it to Mason County

Steel maker Nucor made it official Wednesday afternoon that it plans to build a $2.7 billion steel mill in a Mason County soy bean field. The company said it’s going to need about 2,000 contractors at peak in order to build the facility and employ 800 to 1,000 people once it gets to full production. It took a special session of the legislature to complete the deal to lead to what will become a $1 billion tax break. The Mason County Commission and school board also had to agree to take payment in lieu of taxes which would have pushed the plant to another state. Nucor will pay $60,000 for the first three years and then $1 million a year after that. Nucor sweetened the deal with a $1 million gift to Mason County Schools. WCHS TV said the average compensation for Nucor employees over the last three years has been estimated at $95,000 a year.
