Opening arguments began Monday in a landmark trial between the state of West Virginia and three opioid drug manufacturers: Janssen, Teva and Allergan. The trial is happening at Kanawha County Circuit Court, and Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said it’s the first ever statewide trial against the opioid manufacturers. In his opening statement, Morrisey addressed the rate of overdose deaths in the state, the amount of babies born exposed to drugs and the drug companies that did not take steps to address critical issues. The trial is expected to take up to two months. The state has 48 witnesses that it’s planning to call, but it could go higher, according to Morrisey.
