Unwanted Changes Could Impact Veterans’ Centers

Ted Diaz, secretary of the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance, said a recent report by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that included recommendations to “modernize facilities and realign priorities” would lead to the discontinuation of in-patient and emergency room care at some state VA centers. The reductions in services would apply to the Beckley VA Medical Center, the Louis A. Johnson Medical Center in Clarksburg and the Hershel “Woody” Williams VAMC in Huntington. Services removed would include spinal cord injuries/disorders and blindness rehabilitation, among others. Diaz said he and his staff, at the direction of Gov. Jim Justice, have reached out to West Virginia’s congressional delegation with their concerns and recommended the public do the same.
