Elk River Tragedy Has Been Ruled a Murder-Suicide

A volunteer firefighter in Braxton County was killed trying to rescue a woman and child from a car that had driven into the Elk River on Sunday. It happened around 2:30 p.m. near the senior center in Sutton, according to Braxton County Emergency Services Director John Hoffman. Hoffman said the woman and a child were inside the car when it drove into the water. The woman, child and volunteer firefighter all died. The firefighter has been identified as 24-year old John Forbush, who was a 4-year member of the Gassaway VFD. The fire department said the Braxton County Sheriff’s Office and West Virginia State Police are handling the investigation. The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office is handing the details surrounding Forbush’s death.
