Hundreds of residents gathered outside the steps of the Nicholas County Courthouse Sunday night for a vigil to remember a fallen deputy who lost his life in the line of duty. Deputy Thomas Baker died after being shot Friday evening while responding to a domestic disturbance in the Birch River area. One of those in the crowd at the vigil was Cpl. J. Ellison, who was shot in the leg during the incident involving two suspects when Baker was struck by gunfire.The surviving suspect has been charged with murder. Baker will be laid to rest on Wednesday. Services are planned at the Summersville Armory and Convention Center. Visiting hours for the general public are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., with the funeral beginning at 5 p.m. Baker’s burial will follow the funeral at Walker Cemetery in Summersville.
