Marshall University President Brad D. Smith outlined the university’s key issues Monday and what it’s doing to address them. In his first news conference since taking office, Smith identified 25 topics or issues that were brought up during a series of listening sessions he led on campus during his first 100 days in the role. Data from the sessions was collected and analyzed by a third-party company and presented by Smith on Monday. Among the themes or issues, four were determined to be critical: enrollment, student experience, staff needs and diversity. A chief objective is to reverse declining enrollment. The second-most mentioned topic during the discussions was the need for an improved end-to-end student experience, including additional academic and health resources or support, more career readiness training and programs, better inclusion of minority and commuter students and improvements to the campus experience.
