Bluefiled State College has become a University. July 1 marked the first day of Bluefield State as a University, which President Robin Capehart said elevates the school to the next level. School officials have also said it puts them in a more advantageous category when recruiting for sports. Bluefield University will have a football team and twelve other sports have been added. The school will continue its partnership with the City of Bluefield.
