New Sports Complex Could Boost Kanawha Valley’s Economy

A multimillion-dollar project would convert the former Macy’s building at Charleston Town Center and adjacent parking garage into a sports complex with an aquatic center, a rock-climbing wall, exercise gyms and a main gymnasium. Charleston city officials and Kanawha County commissioners said it’s the largest financial joint venture ever between the city and county. The proposed Capital Sports Center would feature an aquatic center, six basketball courts or 12 volleyball courts, an indoor turf field, two wrestling mats, eight pickleball courts, an elevated running/walking track and more. The city and county leaders said that the proposed complex, paired with existing facilities, will allow the Kanawha Valley to host some of the biggest youth sports tournaments and facilities in the country, having a large economic impact.
