Charleston’s police chief said there could have been a much different outcome if not for the heroics of a K-9 officer, who was shot and killed by a suspect who was struggling Saturday with two other officers. Police Chief James “Tyke” Hunt said during a news conference on Monday that the city plans to have a funeral service with full honors for K-9 Axel, who died after being shot by a suspect during an arrest attempt on East Point Drive. Chief Hunt said the K-9’s handler, Patrolman Josh Clendenin, told him Axel saved his life. Chief Hunt added that the department’s K-9’s are not ever dogs to them, they are officers. Full police honors will be given to Axel at the upcoming funeral.
