West Virginia State Police said they are investigating after an inmate died over the weekend at the South Central Regional Jail in Kanawha County. Family members identified the inmate as 45-year old William Samples. A spokesperson for the state Division of Corrections said in a statement Monday that an inmate was found dead Sunday morning by an apparent self-inflicted injury at the South Central Regional Jail. The death follows a protest by the activist group West Virginia Poor People’s Campaign, that has called for a sweeping federal probe of the deaths at West Virginia’s prisons.
