Animal shelters typically see an increase in the number of pets brought in around Independence Day. As of Friday morning there were more than 300 animals in the Kanawha-Charleston Animal Shelter and more than 100 additional animals in foster care. Shelter community engagement manager Angie Gillenwater told Eyewitness News that more animals go missing on July 4 than any other day of the year. Since the shelter is already overflowing with animals, strays will be accepted by appointment only. For adopters. there’s a special deal going now, adult dogs, cats and kittens can be adopted for $25.
