Flood recovery continues in Fayette County with the help of FEMA

One year has passed since areas like Smithers in Fayette County and Campbells Creek and Hughes Creek in Kanawha County were devastated by high water. Despite significant flooding in areas like Campbells and Hughes Creek, Kanawha County still did not meet the damage threshold and was denied FEMA assistance. In Fayette County, Smithers was also hard hit. Fayette was approved for FEMA assistance but only for public property. According to Smithers Mayor Anne Cavalier, Smithers lost $14-15 million worth of sewer lines and about $635,000 worth of city property in the flood. Eyewitness News reported that FEMA officials have been meeting with them frequently about the reimbursement process but that will take time.
