West Virginia’s Safe Haven law allows people to surrender their baby who is 30 days old or less at places like hospitals or fire departments. The St. Albans Fire Department wants to add a Safe Haven Baby Box that would be the first of its kind in the state. Expenses from installation to the annual service fee would bring the total for the box to around $18,000 dollars. Eyewitness News said, if a baby were to be surrendered to a Safe Haven Baby Box, a series of alarms would be triggered and someone at the fire station would be able to immediately get the child out of the box. Those interested in giving toward the Safe Haven Baby Box can send donations to the St. Albans Fire Department. City officials ask that donations be marked as “Baby Box.”
