West Virginia’s Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation is striving to make improvements to the system, and pay incentives are part of that. New corrections officers are making $40,000 which is about $5,000 more than what they previously made. They will also get an $8,000 raise after two years. Those with a current position will start getting an annual increase of $250 starting next year. Eyewitness News said vacancies, now at 990, sit below 1,000 for the first time since the pandemic started. West Virginia correctional officers have voiced concerns about pay, safety and work culture and lawmakers will look at legislation in the next session to bring about improvements.
